COLT 45 GUN SIX-SHOOTER
Colt 45 Colt Single-Action Army Used Revolver
This Colt Single-Action Army in .45 Colt was manufactured between 1876 & 1877.
The mechanism of the Colt SAA may seem somewhat archaic; however it has, for a service weapon, the advantage of simplicity and solidity: dismantling and reassembly are easy; dust and humidity are well tolerated. Certainly a part can break, but it can still work. The robustness of the Single Action is mainly due to its closed steel frame. The hammer is easy and quick to cock thanks to its position and the flexibility of the main spring. The weapon is loaded in principle at the notch of the half-cocked, the barrel then being free to turn. The hammer of the Colt has 3 notches:
the transport notch which should avoid having the hammer in direct contact with a full chamber (the best security consists in loading the cylinder with only 5 cartridges, and leaving the hammer down on the empty chamber).
the loading notch having the disadvantage that if the hammer breaks free, it has enough power to hit the primer effectively.
Finally there is the guts of the cock, the hammer being fully drawn. All it takes is a slight pressure on the trigger tail for the shot to fire.
The Colt U.S. Cavalry Model , six-shot, single-action (must manually cock the hammer with each shot) uses .45 caliber (45/100 of an inch) metal cartridges. It fires 255-grain (16.52 g) .45 caliber (11.43 mm) flattened ogival lead bullets propelled by 28 grains (max. load 40 grains or 2.59 grams of black powder) with a velocity of output of 247m/s. Its barrel is 7.5 inches long (19cm). The weapon has a blue patina, the carcass is tempered with marbled color and the stock in oiled walnut.
